Kscope 13 Review
Last week I attended my very first Kscope event in New Orleans. Kscope is an annual ODTUG event originally geared towards Oracle database development but has expanded to include other areas such ADF, Essbase, EPM, BI etc.
I was accepted as a speaker to present in the "The Developer's Toolbox" category where I presented on "SQL Developer for DBAs".
Honestly, I had high expectations going to Kscope. I remember seeing tweets from users on last year's conference and felt a bit left out based on the buzz from some of the attendees. Fortunately, the conference lived up to the expectations. It was well organized and the events flowed without a hitch. It wasn't as crowded as other user conferences I've attended such as OpenWorld or Collaborate - which is a good thing. The smaller size makes it more intimate and easier for attendees to network with each other. I met up with colleagues from past events as well as met new ones within my social media network.
I planned on attending a couple of APEX sessions since I didn't expect too much DBA related content. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see quite a number of DBA content as well. Some of my favorite sessions included:
SQL Developer 4.0 by Jeff Smith
Oracle Database 12c - Pluggable Databases by Tom Kyte
12c Optimizer and Optimizer Tips and Tricks by Maria Colgan
Oracle Database 12c: A Beta Tester's Perspective by Bobby Curtis
Delphix: Instant Database Cloning and Changing the Development Paradigm by Kyle Hailey
A Few of My Favorite PL/SQL Things by Steven Feuerstein
The Enterprise Manager Command Line by Kellyn Pot'Vin
There was also a lively panel discussion with panelists including Cary Millsap, Kellyn Pot'Vin, Steven Feuerstein and Tim Gorman. It was mostly Database 12c centric since the software became available on that day but there were also discussions about general development as well.
Sessions aside - the networking opportunities abounded. The venue at the Sheraton Hotel New Orleans facilitated many new friendships since all the sessions and most of the attendees were in the same location. I even got to hang out and have lunch with one of my role models - Cary Millsap. The "Big Easy" backdrop also provided a climate of fun and relaxation. Last but not least the Keynote speaker Doc Hendley provided an emotional but inspiring talk about his experiences with his Wine to Water foundation which provides safe, clean drinking water to people in nine countries. He proves that even one unlikely and forgotten soul can make a positive impact on many.
Kudos to ODTUG, conference chair, various track managers and volunteers. I'm looking forward to attend Kscope in the future.
Here are the slides from my presentation if you're interested.
