Configuring Self-Service Login Page

Image
Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c allows us to customize the page that self service users see when logging in instead of the usual EM Console login page. This is useful for Cloud Providers who offer private cloud services to their clients. With just a few small steps you can have your own customized login  page. Enable the SSA login page $ emctl set property -name oracle.sysman.ssa.logon.ssa_oms -value true Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c Release 2 Copyright (c) 1996, 2012 Oracle Corporation.   All rights reserved. SYSMAN password: Property oracle.sysman.ssa.logon.ssa_oms for oms oms.example.com:4889_Management_Service has been set to value true OMS restart is required to reflect the new property value Set a custom alternate text message for the Cloud Provider on the login page.  $ emctl set property -name oracle.sysman.ssa.logon.cloud_provider_alt_text -value "Nelson Cloud Provider" Oracle Enterprise Manag...

Look who's tweeting now - Sending OEM Notifications via Twitter

Image
Disclaimer: The steps described in this post have only been tested in a lab environment. Verify that your organization's security policy isn't being violated when doing any of these steps. Twitter is a public social networking platform and has inherent security risks. I will not accept responsibility if you perform this in your production environment. Many applications built in the past couple of years have integrated social networking widgets (useful or not) to connect a social world via Twitter, Facebook, Google+ etc. However, most enterprise applications still rely on email as the primary notification method. Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c allows us to send notifications for incidents, events, jobs out of the box via email. In addition, EM12c supports advanced notification methods including OS scripts, PL/SQL scripts and SNMP traps. For the complete description of Notification Methods you can read the chapter in the Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control...

Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c Release 3 Upgrade

Image
The third release of Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control is now available. It includes numerous enhancements such as updated user interface, improved EMCLI with scripting options, Administration Group enhancements, OMS Disaster improvements among others. For the complete list see the New Features page. For users still running on pre-12c or 12.1.0.1, it is a highly recommended upgrade. If you are running EM 12.1.0.2 you may see some benefits of upgrading but I personally wouldn't rush off unless there were some compelling features/fixes that would be of benefit. That said, if you do decide on going full speed with the new release, here is a step-by-step document on how I upgraded a POC environment with a single OMS and repository on the same server from 12.1.0.2 with PSU3 to 12.1.0.3. The official Oracle documentation lists the detailed steps for the upgrade here . The pre-requisite steps needed for the upgrade are listed below: 0. Allocate additional space (14GB on Linux...

Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12.1.0.2 - Database Template

Image
The latest release of Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c (12.1.0.2) is accompanied by a Database template pre-configured for the repository. I was quite pleased to see this addition, since installing Enterprise Manager required some upfront footwork in configuring the database to be used as the repository. Personally, I was a bit annoyed every time the installer complained about parameters that it needed changed on the repository database during installation  (though some we not mandatory during installation). As a pre-requisite to using the template you should have a software-only installation of a Oracle 11.2.0.3 RDBMS software. The installation instructions warn that the template is suitable for a Simple Install. However you may also use it as a basis of an Advanced Installation. You can read the rest of the instructions here . Note: The instructions in the documentation has a screenshot of a Oracle Database 12c DBCA instead of the 11.2.0.3 DBCA. I suspect this...

Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c Cloud Control: Plugin Deployment

Image
Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c Cloud Control incorporates the use of plugins to extend its functionality for management of the complete cloud stack. Plugins are provided for databases, middleware, virtualization among others. For a few weeks I had been struggling to deploy Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c agents on IBM AIX 6.1 targets. This became a very lengthy cycle of patching, searching and tweeting in an attempt to get things going. I finally had the agent deployed on the hosts but no targets were being discovered. After coming across   MOS Note [ID 1388143.1]   I discovered that I needed to update and deploy the database plugin in order to discover the database targets. To deploy plugins go to Setup->Extensibility->Self Update From this screen you can see a list of plugins and their status. If there is an updated plugin available it will have a non-zero revision number in the Revision column and the status will be available. The Oracle Database plugin upda...
