Collaborate 12 Sessions

I've been lucky enough to have been accepted as a presenter at IOUG Collaborate 12 in Las Vegas, NV to be held April 22-26. I will be presenting the following sessions:

High Availability Boot Camp: Looking at RAC, Clusterware/Grid Infrastructure Diagnostic Tools
Learning Oracle with Oracle VM VirtualBox


As RAC SIG US Events Chair I will also be organizing the RAC SIG Experts Panel and Birds of a Feather. 
I'm excited and anxious for what will be my first public presentations. Hope the attendees will enjoy it.

Virtualbox 4.1 Shared folders on Oracle Linux UEK

Recently, while trying to patch my test RAC database I ran into an issue where I couldn't mount the shared folders in the guest VMs. Neither manual mount or automount were working. I would get the following message when trying to mount the shared folder manually: [root@racnode2 ~]# mount -t vboxsf orasource /mnt/orastage mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on orasource, missing codepage or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so The tail of dmesg showed the following additional errors: sf_read_super_aux err=-22 sf_read_super_aux err=-22 sf_read_super_aux err=-22 After doing a search on Google I finally found this thread in the Virtualbox tickets. Apparently the problem is with Oracle Linux's unbreakable enterprise kernel  2.6.32-200.13.1.el5uek. The thread lists several workarounds. Oracle Home Cloning: Tools and Techniques

One of the many necessary and frequent tasks that a database administrator performs before creating a database is installing the Oracle database binaries. These binaries form what is known as an Oracle Home (referenced by the ORACLE_HOME environment variable on Linux and UNIX environments). Unfortunately, this is also one of the most mundane and uninteresting tasks a DBA can perform. So like all good DBAs know, the best way to deal with such repetitive task is to automate it. Automating installations of Oracle database binaries enables us to reliably repeat the process to enable faster installation as well as provide identical copies of the software in multiple environments.
